March Newsletter

MARCH NEWSLETTER

March began with the arrival of plenty of new patchwork fabric by Stof. Dots, roses and hearts for a splash of colour or soft blues to tone things down. A handful are shown below, the rest are easy to find in our Quilting section under ‘What’s New’:

The Moda Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs and Layer Cakes for March are ‘Rouenneries Deux’ by French General. Soft reds, greys and creams with a delicate floral design will make a beautiful quilt on their own but also combine well with our other French General fabrics, either pre-cut or off the bolt:

Kiki’s was at the Dornoch Fibre Fest this month, a very successful event for all fibre artists and enthusiasts. There were opportunities for people to try out lace making and weaving, spinning and felting, as well as workshops and lots of stalls with tempting fibre goodies! We brought along a small selection of our products and had such a busy time that we only managed to take a quick picture before the doors opened:

The Kirkton Woodland and Heritage Group organised and funded a patchwork & quilting workshop with Keira McFleat and a spinning workshop with Teresa Mitchell. These were held over a period of three weeks and were mainly for beginners. By the end of the patchwork workshop everyone was confidently using rotary cutters and rulers, and these lovely little quilts had been made, designed by Keira and called ‘the Heritage Star’. A young quilter also joined in and did some lovely hand stitching:

During the spinning workshops Teresa started with clear explanations of the basic principles of fleece preparation, carding, tension, spinning and plying and by the third week everyone had produced (much to their own amazement!) a skein of useable yarn in one colour or barber-poled for an interesting effect. Some of the Lochcarron Spinners also came along to learn how to spin on a drop spindle:

Follow-up workshops have already been requested!

The Lochcarron Quilters & Stitchers are all working on different projects at the moment, some finishing UFOs and others inspired to try new things. Pat is one of our very adventurous members and has recently completed these amazing A4 quilts:

The Lochcarron Spinners have not been idle either and Teresa has spun up some of our Merino Rainbow and knitted this beautiful shawlette:

Our apologies for the late publication of this March Newsletter, to make up for the delay the April Newsletter will follow hot on its heels!
